Alabama Hargrove is headed South to meet the family of her hunky handyman boyfriend, Reed O’Hara. On the way, she stumbles on a grand, old house and catches the renovating bug again. Reed and Alabama purchase the house, but when he discovers the lifeless body of the previous owner, Alabama must clear his name before their renovating days are over. This small town has secrets, and so does the house… it's up to Alabama to solve the mystery or possibly be haunted for life.

The Haunted FixerUpper A Haunted Renovation Mystery Book 2 eBook Rose Pressey

Got this one as a freebie, so I purchased and read the first book in the series (Flip That Haunted House) first. As disappointing at IT was, I followed it up with Alabama Hargrave's latest adventure. What a waste of time. And what a shame - this plot could have been turned into an amazing read. Unfortunately, the disjointed story-telling, facile and unbelievable characters, and poor editing killed it deader than the ghost haunting the house. The heroine has the attention span, and common sense, of a gnat and the maturity level of your average 7th grader. No one would behave the way the author has these characters acting. In addition, Bama and Reed are supposed to be in their mid- to late 20's; however, the author would have you believe Reed (and his high school classmates) should appear in a yearbook from two decades ago. It doesn't take a MENSA candidate to do the simple math. Too many inconsistencies, repetitions, idiot characters, and inane "self-talk" from Alabama kept pulling me out of the story and reminding me I was reading a badly written book. Sorry, Rose. Maybe you should try a different target market - or a different genre.

The Haunted FixerUpper A Haunted Renovation Mystery Book 2 eBook Rose Pressey Reviews

I liked the story, the characters, most of this book. If she, Rose Pressey, had decent editing it would be worth reading. The mother is great, flashy and so good at embarrassing her daughter. The best friend could use a backbone. Boyfriend is good looking and nice. Main character, well other than an outlandish name, Alabama. She is mostly well rounded. There are a lot of paragraphs where she is thinking stupid, outlandish, things. Those could be taken out. I will read more and hope the other series had better editing.
Alabama Hargrove and her boyfriend Reed O'Hara are on their way to Kentucky to visit his family when their truck breaks down on an out-of-the way road. While hiking to his uncle's house, they take a short cut where Alabama sees and falls in love with the local haunted plantation. After some convincing, Reed and Alabama meet with the present owner Gordon and convince him to sell it to them, since he is having difficulty completing his own intended renovations. Weeks later, Gordon requests they meet with him to transfer some additional paperwork to them. However, when they arrive at his office, they find his dead body. Reed quickly becomes a murder suspect, which means Alabama has to switch into investigator mode to rescue her boyfriend. Can she find the murderer before it's too late? Oh, and did I forget to mention that their renovation was again being done to a haunted house! This is a fun series with just enough mystery and paranormal activity to keep your attention. The characters, including her mother and best friend, are quirky and memorable. I am looking forward to the next story in this series.
I have read a number of Rose Pressey's books. I think Haunted Fixer-Upper may be her best work yet. This is the second book in the series. You do not need to read the first one to enjoy this one but you may want to just for the laughs. It is a fast, fun read. There is no language or hot sex scenes in the book so it is perfect for YA or those adults who would rather not read that in the books they choose.
Alabama Hargrove is back. This time she is down in Georgia meeting her boyfriends family. While on the way to his daddy's house Alabama spots a house that just needs her touch. It is haunted of course. When Bama goes to meet with the owner she sees her boyfriend standing over the dead body with a hammer in his hand! Even though she does not tell the anyone about the hammer, Reed is under suspicion. Bama's best friend and momma come down to help out. If you read the first book then you know Momma Hargrove is a hoot. Even though she does not bring down the gold jumpsuits she stills lights up the page. I love Momma Hargrove. The conversations between her and Bama are always good for a laugh but also for demonstrating the loving relationship they have. Bama sees a man in the woods watching her. The workman Reed hired had a fight with the dead man the day before he died. A woman is following her around. Then Bama cannot get a hold of the three people she loves.
Bama is at it again. While traveling with her boyfriend, Reed, to his family reunion in Georgia, she finds and decides to purchase another fixer-upper. This time a Georgia plantation. It's haunted by a beautiful woman who was murdered 20 years before. Alabama (Bama) purchases it from a car salesman who had bought it and was trying to turn it into some sort of Medieval castle. After the sale goes through, she gets a call from the car salesman to come pick up some paperwork on the house. Her boyfriend agrees to meet her at the car lot, and is the first there where he finds the salesman dead.
While beginning renovations, she sees the ghost first hand, who guides her to some yearbooks upstairs from the school where the ghost had been a teacher. She also finds the ghosts' appointment book that shows who her last appointment was with before she was murdered. Her boyfriend is a suspect in the murder of the car salesman because he was there first. While trying to solve the murder and clear Reed, Bama runs into all kinds of problems...a white Ford car that follows them everywhere they go, an eccentric 80 year old historical society preservationist who is almost anal about making them follow the codes of the time period in restoring the house, and a very strange man who watches them from the edge of the woods of the house they are working on.
They experience cold drafts in the house, strange footsteps, and the feeling of being watched all the time. A good fun read.
Alabama and Reed are heading to Georgia for his family reunion. The truck breaks down and they have to walk. They spot an old uninhabited house and Alabama wants to buy and renovate it. They find the owner and purchase the property. The ex-owner calls them to pick up some paperwork and Reed finds him dead. Now he is a suspect. Alabama sees a ghost in the house who wants Alabama to find her killer.

Cute, lighthearted cozy but really needed some editing. I don't usually mark down for that but it was pretty bad and at times was confusing. Also some repetition issues.
